I found Dr Kathryn McCarthy/McCarthy Clinic at Litfield House Medical Centre after searching the Internet for a solution to my problem with anal skin tags. Various 'same-day' laser clinics came up however I decided that I would prefer to see a qualified colorectal surgeon and I'm so pleased that I did. Kathryn and her nurse are really great and made me feel totally comfortable throughout. Kathryn was also extremely thorough in describing the procedure and the aftercare that would be needed and I was sent away to think carefully abut the procedure before proceeding. I think this 'cooling-off' period was very important for me as it gave me time to read-up and consider all the consequences and to arrange a couple of days off work and no social engagements. The procedure itself, under local analeptic, was superb and I felt no discomfort or pain at all. Importantly, I also felt that my dignity was respected - after all, this is a very intimate procedure! I was only in the clinic for 90 minutes and most of this time was waiting for the numbing cream to take effect and then a 30 minute monitoring period afterwards, with a cup of coffee, before being discharged. I was sent home with really clear advice for after-care and some topical numbing cream. Once back home and the anaesthetic had worn off I was very uncomfortable and I was glad that I had taken time off work, however once the Ibuprofen and Paracetamol kicked in, the pain was manageable and I was able to get a good nights sleep. I needed the pain relief for the following 3 days but I did feel able to go about my usual day. I'm very pleased that I found Dr McCarthy and that I went ahead with this procedure. I would recommend her and the Litfield team 100%.

Miss McCarthy always listens and comes up with a way to deal with the problem. She is one of the best doctors in Southmead Hospital that I have ever seen or dealt with. I would completely recommend her.

I am scheduled to have an operation with Dr McCarthy in a few weeks. In the meantime, I am suffering very much from a longstanding medical issue. During the diagnosing and pre operation consultations. Dr McCarthy carefully listened to my symptoms and carried out thorough examination with great care and patience. She provided detail explainations to ease my worries and prescribed effective medications which greatly reliefed my agony while waiting for the operation. Dr McCarthy is extremely professional, knowledgeable with a caring heart for her patients. I have full confidence on my healing progress under her care.

My experience being under the care of Ms McCarthy has been nothing short of excellent. Having undergone an initial consultation where she carefully listened to my complaint, she swiftly organised ongoing investigations. She herself undertook the flexible sigmoidoscopy and from start to finish was caring, professional and skilled. The procedure was painless and delivered the results required. If you’re looking for a colorectal consultant who has the capacity to conduct a consultation with empathy as well as demonstrating first class technical skills, Ms McCarthy is the clinician to choose.
